Ming Wanli Blue and White Wucai Dragon and Pearl Box, Wanli Mark

The creation of Wanli Wucai (five-color) porcelain was an extremely complex process, making surviving examples exceptionally rare. Artisans during the Wanli period explored optimal temperatures for various colored glazes, leading to a significant advancement in porcelain production. They shifted from the earlier two-stage firing technique to a four-stage process. First, the porcelain body or underglaze blue design was fired at a temperature exceeding 1300°C. Then, the piece underwent three additional firings, each with gradually lower temperatures, to apply and set the red, green, and yellow enamels. This meticulous four-stage firing process ultimately resulted in the vibrant and richly colored Wanli Wucai ware.
